A quick rant on education in Cusco

Peru's government recently announced that millions of school children would have winter holidays two weeks earlier than scheduled to help stop the spread of swine flu (read the whole article here).

I'm sure Peruvian children everywhere are thrilled. And teachers, too.

To some, this may sound like a strategic move which will stop further spread of EL GRIPE PORCINAL. However, to me, this seems like just another excuse to cancel school. It's unbelievable how often classes are canceled here- there is literally a day for everything (the teacher, the mother, Saint Peter, the sun, etc.) and the celebration of all these days does not include school. What they do include are PARADES. And these parades require hours and hours of practice- oh! More time NOT spent learning!

Being a teacher here, yes, it means lots of extra vacation days for me, but since no one actually tells us about these days until 2 hours before class, it usually just puts all our planning to waste. It's also hard to establish repetition and habitual behavior with the girls when every other class is canceled (which has happened!).

I admit it, I love overly structured and organized American society.
