First we tried to have an end of the year party for our girls out in the country. This party was going to be complete with a Michael Jackson mix (the girls go nuts for the MJ), a pinata, two really big (and expensive) cakes, student of the year awards, box wine for the profes, and promised improv dance moves from Trevor, Charlie and Kevin. Well, we lugged all our stuff out to Pacca (which is an hour long journey that includes multiple modes of transportation) and when we arrived, the school looked like more like a jail. Everything was locked and no one was in sight. Turns out, even though they told us the opposite, Pacca DID close early due to swine flu. Thanks for telling us. Alex and I definitely shared a "I hate Peru" moment. Or day. Anyway... what could have been:
Then, I had my birthday. It was a beautiful Cusqueñan day- we all headed out to the Saliñeras, a massive collection of salt mines in the middle of the mountains. The Incans used them and families in local communities still use them. Most of the salt stays in Peru, and some is exported to Japan, apparently? Regardless, very very cool.
And then... MACHU PICCHU! After almost 5 months here, I still hadn't been, so decided I'd go with our lovely visitors! It was everything everyone says it is, though the massive crowds did put a small damper on things. And the 4 am wake up call. Here's Lindsey and I doing our best ancient explorers imitation (Lindsey is examining an imaginary artifact with her imaginary magnifying glass):
